JUJUY | ATTRACTIONS

Located at the northwest north point in Argentina. Between 21º 46' and 24º 37' south latitude, and between 64º 9' and 67º 13' west longitude. Jujuy province is an extension of 53,219 km2, 3% continental area in Argentina.

To the north it has 312 km border with Bolivia, and towards the west 130 km border with Chile. To the east and south it limits with Salta Province.

La Puna, which is an impressive space full of light, a clear, blue sky and a brown tapestry where vicuñas, guanacos and suris amble. It is a quiet landscape, the people's customs reflect from time immemorial where magic and reality fuse together into its music and celebrations.

It has the localities of Abra Pampa, La Quiaca, Santa Catalina, Rinconada and Mina Pirquitas. You can also enjoy Laguna de los Pozuelos, which has been declared Natural Monument.

It is an arid plain between 2500 and 4500 mts above sea level, where it is very common to see its inhabitants grazing sheep and llamas protected by Coquena, the good elf of the heights. At night, when the vicuñas, flamingos and suris rest the “black” sky is punched by thousands of stars of amazing brightness, “ a night in La Puna is unforgettable”

Monumento Natural Laguna de los Pozuelos (Laguna de los Pozuelos Natural Monument)

This Natural Monument, that protects Laguna de los Pozuelos (the Lagoon), was created in 1981. It is located in the puna regions in the north of Jujuy, between Rinconada, Lagunillas, Yoscaba, Cieneguillas and Pozuelos. It is an extension of 15,000 acres. It is important because of the bird fauna that inhabits that place, this lagoon has been included in the ‘Lista de Humedales' of International importance (Ramsar Convension).

La Quiaca

This city borders on Bolivia, a bridge made of concrete, where there is Customs and Migrations, joins it with Villazón. People in a variety of ‘altiplano' garments pass continuously. The inhabitants from the most remote places gather in Manca Fiesta between the second and the third Sundays in October, where they barter their own products, especially typical pots, ‘birques' and jars of all sizes and shapes. Regional meals are offered and it is also an occasion for dances and social meetings.

As from Purmamarca, we do Cuesta de Lipan, which offers an amazing panoramic view of the dessert South Puna, We go through Salinas Grandes (place where the movie “La Deuda Interna” was made). There is an ancient town, with a church from XVI C., made of stones, adobe and mud. The bells that vibrate in the tower were taken from Chuqisaca and the tower is ornamented by remarkable pictures from Cuzco school.

There is Customs and Migrations for transit to Chile.

The axis of this region is Rio Grande, built in among the colourful hills, natural communication way, today 9 NR.

As in la Puna, the houses look like as if they had the roots in the earth: they are made of adobe, mixed with earth and straw. Settlements of great colonial importance are developed in relation with important pre Hispanic settlements. Today, they are the uncountable remains of this past; ‘pucarás', antigales, cave paintings, etc (which can be visited). Hispanic customs are also in the region, which stand out during the community celebrations, where all the town participates (for example, the worship to Pachamama). The Carnival, in fast cycle between exhuming and burial, is developed in all its steps. You can have access to all the places in this region by car, on tarmac road. Besides, you can go along the same road by bus service (25 regular daily services that link this place. In summer, the road can be temporarily cut by the rains.

Along 9 NR you have access to 52 NR, to reach Purmamarca. Around 400 people inhabit this place stopped in XVII C, at the foot of impressive hills (Cerro de los Siete Colores, Seven Colours Hill). Its church, consecrated to Santa Rosa de Lima, dates from 1648 and it is a Historical National Monument. It has a crafts fair that is there every day. On the same route (towards Susques), a few kms, we find the archaeological deposit of Huachichocana.

The Valleys

Jujuy is a province full of contrasts. It is very near the Capital City. There are amazing places with beautiful landscapes and mild climates ready to be visited. Lagoons, rivers, hills, green plains, offer an appropriate environment where nature has left unique beauties.

Jujuy capital is found in this region, Yala and Termas de Reyes Lagoons are found here towards the north, while towards the south you can enjoy Lo Alisos, Las Maderas and La Ciénaga dams, where you can practise water sports.

San Salvador de Jujuy, provincial capital, is the starting point to have access to different circuits, including circuits that only require half day or one day, with return to the city.

The options are varied: Thermal waters baths, horseback riding, atherine and trout fishing, walks, parasailing, etc.

It is found between Grande and Xibi-Xibi rivers, 1259 m above sea level, its peculiar topography and its appearance have given them the metaphorical name of “Silver little cup”. Around “Plaza de Armas”, we can see the Cathedral (1761-65), the Town Council (today provincial police headquarters), the Governor's House (1907-1921). In this place, Belgrano has introduced the national flag to the people, in the balconies of the Town Council (1812), Canónigo Gorriti blessed the flag in the Cathedral.

The flag was donated to the people of Jujuy and, today, it is kept in the Flag's Room at the House of the Provincial Governor. The Governor's House, a French Style palace, is framed by the sculptures of Lola Mora, remarkable artist (1866-1936) and also visionary of the oil exploration in the Northwest.

Other places to visit in the city are Historical Provincial Museum, which is the house where Lavalle was killed in 1841 and Sacro Art Museum, where XVII C paintings brought from Cuzco are kept.
